The Stockholm Centre for the Ethics of War and Peace is based in the Philosophy Department of the University of Stockholm.  The Centre’s remit is to explore the ethics of war in the 21st century, looking at how traditional just war theory – usually state-based in its approach – might be revised and improved in light of recent wars, the rise of terrorism, and more general shifts in the relationship between states and their citizens.  As well as considering issues surrounding just causes for war, the Centre seeks to enhance our understanding of ‘post bellum’ issues, including the use of amnesties, war crimes trials, and the duties of victorious parties in the aftermath of a conflict.

The Centre’s funding is part of Helen Frowe’s Wallenberg Academy Scholarship. Through a series of conferences, workshops, public seminars and other events, the Centre aims to facilitate new philosophical research, and inform and improve public and policy debates about the ethics of war.
